    These terms reflect the importance of dialogue and community in both Pacific Island and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

    In many Pacific Island cultures, a gathering to discuss a subject may be referred to as a “talanoa,” which is a term used in several Pacific languages to describe an informal conversation or dialogue. Fono: Commonly used in Samoa and other islands, this term refers to a meeting or assembly for discussion.

    For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, a similar gathering might be called a “yarn,” which refers to storytelling or sharing knowledge in a communal setting. Meeting: A general term for any gathering to discuss matters of importance.Cultural Gathering: A broader term that encompasses various types of meetings focused on cultural exchange and discussion.
